How to add a subscription to your Google Reader?

Sometimes it can be a bit confusing to add a subscription to a RSS Reader because once you click on the RSS icon, there is a new page that pops with a list of posts and it can be difficult to know what to do next...

Follow the slides below and you should be able to know how to add any RSS to your Google Reader:

Who's blogging in our neck of the wood?

Module 1 (le mien)

I must admit that I subscribe to so many blogs for work that I don't do it for myself. I did follow my mum's blog when she went on her big trip but that's it!

Anyway, here are some of the blogs I follow for work:
These are amongst the international librarians' blogs I follow and use when updating the WCL staff blog. I also follow NZ librar/y/ians' blogs like:

If I was following blogs for myself, I would follow probably try to follow blogs in French ; )

How to decide who can leave comments on your blog and moderation

Another thing you can do with Blogger is  deciding who can leave comments and setting moderation for comments. In you Blogger dashboard, click on 'Settings', click on 'Comments' and choose your options. Don't forget to click on 'Save Settings'!

How to edit a post once you have published it

Once you have written a post, you might want to edit it for some reason (e.g. typo, want to add something, etc...).
Once in Blogger, click on 'Posting', click on 'Edit Posts' and click on 'Edit' next to shich ever post you want to edit.

Do you use iGoogle?

I am a fan of iGoogle! Have you ever used it? It allows you to create your personnal portal to the Google search engine.

Watch this video below to learn more about what you can do with this product:

What do you think? Will you use this?

I use it to keep track of the WCL blogs amongst other things. My iGoogle page looks like this:

Accessing your Blogger blog

There are two ways you can access your Blogger blog:
  • from the Blogger site home page (just type in your username and password)
  • from your Google account: type in your e-mail and password and tick the box 'Stay signed in' and click 'Sign in' button. Click on Settings (top right of Google page) and click 'Google account settings'. On the page under the section 'My products' is the Blogger icon that you can click on and access your Blogger blog.

Want your blog to be read by only a few people?

If you prefer your blog to be only accessible by a couple of people, or just me, you can change the settings of your blog to do just that.

Once you've created your blog, in Blogger, click on  'Settings', then click on 'Permissions' and in the section 'Blog readers', select the option 'Only people I choose' and invite people you'd like to read your blog by typing their e-mail adress (e.g. name at wcc.govt.nz)

Change your Blogger template

If you are not happy with the range of templates offered on Blogger, go to the Blogger Templates site. You can browse the categories and choose the template you like best.

Here is a little how to:
  • click on the image of the template you like
  • click on 'download' and when the 'file download' box pops up, click on SAVE
  • choose the location where you want to save the zipped file and click SAVE
  • find the location where you saved the zipped file and 'unzipp' it.
  • On Blogger, click on 'Layout' and then click on 'Edit HTML'
  • next to 'Upload a template from a file on your hard drive' click on 'Browse'
  • find your unzipped template folder, double click on it and highlight the .xml file and click on 'Open' and 'Upload'
  • Blogger will ask you to confirm the change to the new folder, click on 'Confirm and Save'
I made a little tutorial so you can see how it looks like when you actually do it:

Now you have a new template! But be aware that:
  1. one can't change the colors
  2. any widgets you previously had on your blog will be lost. You'll have to re-create them.

What you will need to do the Modules

There are quite a few online videos you might watch when working on the Modules, so a good idea is to have headphones handy, ready to plug in your computer. Anything esle you you might notice you'll need, leave a comment : )
